Fourth of July Pet Safety Tips from our Veterinarian in Staten Island

Though Independence Day is a fun-filled day for humans, for most pets, it is a scary, stressful day. In fact, more pets go missing on the Fourth of July than on any other day of the year. Follow these safety tips from our veterinarian in Staten Island to keep your pets safe this holiday. fourth of july pet safety tips from our veterinarian in staten island

1. Prevent Runaways - The noise of celebrations (fireworks, loud music, and shouting) frighten most pets. Many dogs and cats will run away, looking for a safe place to hide. During festivities, secure pets in a quiet location indoors. Items like security vests, scented collars, and pheromone diffusers can help your pets feel safe while you celebrate. If pets must remain outside, be sure they have their identity tags will current contact information and/or have a microchip with up-to-date information.

2. Prevent Poisoning - While items like insect repellant, citronella, lighter fluid, matches, and glow in the dark jewelry make our holiday more fun, they can make your pet very sick. In addition, many human foods and alcohol available at cookouts are toxic to pets. Keep your food and drinks out of any pets' reach.

3. Prevent Heat Stroke - Whether pets are with you or left unattended during the heat of the holiday, make sure they have access to plenty of shade and cool drinking water. Wearing their fur coats all year makes pets extra susceptible to heat stroke and dehydration.
